Child Enviro Rights needs recognition within the policy framework for a sustainable environment and an accountable legal mechanism. The intergenerational equity and impacts are legal concerns which has to stand the test of Constitution of India and UN Guiding Principles of Business and Human Rights and must form indices for growth and development, governing individual, community, business behavior and State actions. The CERU (Child Enviro Rights Unit) is working towards recognition of Children right to participation and their best interest being kept in considerations, legally, similar to EIA (Environment Impact Assessment) towards the ecosystem restoration to damages already caused and minimise in future.
CERU works towards generating awareness through demystifying laws, policy dialogues, information sharing, engaging children in dialogues and creating a wider understanding towards environmental concerns, worldwide.
CERU works in the following are
+ Environmental Law & Policy
+ Children Enviro Law & Policy Intersects
+ Sustainable Development Goals
+ Community Based Projects for mitigating health impacts of unregulated eWaste Mgmt
With the generous support of Bengaluru-based Racaero India Pvt Ltd, Blacksmith Institute Foundation and Independent Thought have joined hands to dig deeper into the Environmental and public health impacts of informal e-waste recycling in a residential colony near Delhi. The project aims to engage with community, particularly youth, women & workers to design long-term sustainable intervention strategies to tackle it. The project is also envisioned as the first step in designing a long-term, multi-modal strategy with imperative inclusion of all stakeholders with elements of replicability in India.
Delhi-NCR, Asia’s biggest scrap market has the dubious distinction of housing several e-waste processing and handling hubs, mostly informal that apply the crude methods for metals extraction. Behta Hazipur is one of the several such hubs identified at the outskirts of eastern parts of Delhi at Loni, district Ghaziabad. A 2018 pre-assessment visit to this site with Pure Earth team has confirmed the soil contamination of the entire area hazardous metals such as Lead, Chromium and Cadmium. These heavy metals and other chemical compounds (POPs) can cause long-term health impacts such as endocrine disruption, cardiovascular, reproduction, lung and growth impairments etc. when exposed chronically as well as acutely.
The work-plan includes formation of a Community Watch Group (CWG); enhance its awareness level; survey to prepare the baseline of socio-demographic, health & environmental statuses and dwell upon solutions to fix these issues.
